What is blacklisting

Blacklisting (DNSBL) is a spam block list that prevents the sending of messages from your mail server. When your mail server falls into one of many blacklists, then the reputation and trust in your domain from which the mail is sent are reduced and the letters from your IP address will not be delivered to the recipients. At the moment there are at least hundreds of organizations that maintain their own blacklists and who have their own criteria for adding a domain to the list.

Types of blacklists

Blacklisting can be divided into two types:

  • Private blacklists
  • Public blacklists

Private lists are based on spam filtering. Such lists are usually maintained by companies that provide services related to mail services and products to protect mail servers. Well known representatives are Hotmail and McAfee. In this case, there is no sending of notifications that the sender’s mail server has got to such a list. Also, you will not know the reason why your domain was blocked and added to the list. In this case, you will have to independently analyze and identify the possible cause of the blocking.

Public black lists are designed to filter mail spam on servers that do not meet security requirements. At the same time, information about entering a domain or IP address is public. It is possible to receive a report about the entry of the mail server in the black list. As well as the ability to independently verify the existence of a domain in a black list remains. Typical representatives of this type of lists are Spamhaus, SORBS and others.

There are about a hundred black lists. At the same time, there are such lists that allow you to delete a blocked IP address for free only once. All subsequent attempts will be made on a fee basis. This is one of the reasons why it is important that the mail server is configured correctly and by highly qualified specialists.
